RIDER ACADEMY · LESSON 05

Riding with a group

Plan the ride, space the group and remove pressure.

A good group ride keeps every rider within their own ability. Agree on the route, stops, signals, lead rider and sweep rider before moving.

Riders illustrating the Riding with a group lesson

How to practice it

1

Hold a rider meeting

Review route, fuel stops, pace, weather, hand signals and what to do if the group separates.

2

Use staggered formation

On suitable straight roads, the leader uses the left third and the next rider follows in the right third with at least a one-second stagger.

3

Go single file when needed

Use at least a two-second following distance on curves, poor surfaces, low visibility and highway entrance or exit areas.

4

Ride your own ride

Do not speed to catch up. Use planned regroup points and allow riders to leave without pressure.

VISUAL TUTORIAL

Choose the formation for the road

Four-panel tutorial comparing staggered formation, single file, lead and sweep riders, and unsafe side-by-side riding
  1. 1Use a staggered formation on suitable straight roads while maintaining a safe time-and-distance cushion.
  2. 2Move to single file with more space for curves, poor surfaces and reduced visibility.
  3. 3Identify the lead and sweep riders before departure so nobody is abandoned.
  4. 4Never ride side by side. Preserve an escape path and room to react.

Study the sequence while parked. Practice moving exercises only in a closed area with full protective gear and qualified instruction.

Practice checklist

  • Keep groups manageable; five to seven riders is a useful target.
  • Place less-experienced riders near the front behind the leader.
  • Carry phones, basic tools and first-aid supplies.
Stop and reassess: Never ride side by side. It removes escape space and can cause motorcycles or handlebars to contact.
