A safe ride begins before the engine starts. Wear protective gear, learn the controls on your exact motorcycle and inspect anything that keeps the bike rolling, stopping and visible.

How to practice it
Dress for the ride
Use a DOT-compliant helmet, eye protection, motorcycle jacket and pants, full-finger gloves and over-the-ankle boots.
Learn the controls
With the engine off, locate the clutch, front brake, rear brake, throttle, shifter, signals, horn and engine cut-off switch.
Use T-CLOCS
Check Tires and wheels, Controls, Lights and electrics, Oil and other fluids, Chassis and Stands.
Set your posture
Reach every control without stretching. Keep your head up, shoulders relaxed, elbows slightly bent and knees against the tank.
Know the controls before the engine starts

- 1Clutch lever — squeeze with your left hand to disconnect engine power from the rear wheel.
- 2Front brake lever — squeeze progressively with your right hand; never grab it suddenly.
- 3Throttle — roll gently with your right hand while keeping your wrist level.
- 4Rear brake pedal — press smoothly with your right foot.
- 5Engine cut-off switch — know its location before starting the motorcycle.
- 6Turn signals — operate with your left thumb and remember to cancel them.
- 7Horn — locate it without looking down.
- 8Ignition — confirm the motorcycle is in neutral before starting.
- 9Gear shifter — lift or press with your left foot while using the clutch.
Study the sequence while parked. Practice moving exercises only in a closed area with full protective gear and qualified instruction.
Practice checklist
- Read the owner’s manual for warning lights and starting procedure.
- Practice mounting and dismounting with the engine off and side stand down.
